Learning Through Action
Have you ever heard people say that they learnt more in their first month on a job than years in college?
And this despite the fact that most jobs don't come with long training programs. Definitely nothing comparable to the years we typically spend in school.
That is because we are forced to learn by doing. Our brains are hard wired to learn through action, we tend to derive concepts from the things we do. And then we are able to apply those in a different setting, because we understood the concepts perfectly when we applied them.
Unfortunately, our typical learning process in school and colleges inverts this process. We are taught concepts in an abstract manner, and we are fed through a hose for years on end with barely any practical application.
Too often than not kids tune out of lessons, “When am I ever going to use this”, is a common and perfectly natural refrain.
What should be the best learning years of our lives turns into an endless drag of textbooks and exams where concepts are learnt and forgotten in quick succession after regurgitating them in exams.
The BuildABot Way
Build a Bot aims to change this, we are not just about lessons in Robotics, but are an entire way of learning through action.
Our students are encouraged to find solutions to the problems themselves, we first build something and then discuss what concepts and principles they learnt in the process. When you learn things in this manner not only does it register, but also you are able to apply your learnings in different situations.
Along the way kids are not only learning the principles of Engineering, Robotics, AI, Coding but also core skills such as problem solving, team work, coordination, communication and first principles thinking.
We live in a world that is rapidly changing. There is no better way to prepare your children for the future by teaching them how to “learn to learn”. And that is by doing things.
